Portishead - The Rip

"The Rip" doesn't sound like a fighter, especially not at first. The backdrop is gently strummed strings that are more organic than we might have expected from the former sample wranglers.
When Beth Gibbons enters, it can't not sound like Portishead though. Her despondant wail continues to be the band's signature element. The pastoral soundtrack here calms her nerves some. She even stays calm throughout a mid-song seismic shift. The warm human playing suddenly morphs into fat retro-futuristic synth tones that are actually pretty inviting themselves. The repeated lines "...white horses, they will take me away/ and the tenderness I feel/ will send the dark underneath..." transform from apprehensive daydream to confident assurance with the added rhythmic thrust. On a comeback record full of surprising new facets for the band.

De La Soul - The Magic Number

De La Soul - Magic Number

De La Soul's '3 Feet High and Rising' is regarded as one of the classic Hip-Hop rap albums of all-time. Its release took hip-hop in another direction with its relaxed style, and sampled like not other band had sampled before. It sold remarkably well on both sides of the Atlantic, although it is only recently that the band have approached similar heights once again.

When '3 Feet...' was created, Pos, Mace et al were all still teenagers, and each track was based upon a number of samples with (extremely laid-back) rapping layered on top.

In fact, it was the sampling which got De La Soul into trouble. Their track 'Transmitting Live From Mars', sampled a song by 'The Turtles'. This resulted in a successful legal action being mounted, and as a result, a hefty chunk of the album's royalties were taken away from the band and their record company. Bearing in mind the track itself was less than a minute long, it seems a harsh price to pay, especially as the process for clearing samples nowadays is much simpler than it was back then.

A number of singles were released from the album, with 'The Magic Number' being the most successful, achieving Top 10 success in the UK. Other successes included 'Say No Go' and 'Me, Myself and I'.

The Roots feat.. Cody Chestnutt - The Seed (2.0)

This is a reworking of an original recording, "The Seed," by Cody Chestnutt, who is a featured vocalist on this track. It appeared on his 2002 debut album 'Headphone Masterpiece', which he recorded in his bedroom. This version with The Roots is much more polished. (thanks, Brian - Edmonton, Canada). The song is about the miracle of birth and about how the band loves rock and roll.

Lacoste - Let's Re-Invent the Game

The Lacoste 75th anniversary has brought forth an interesting concept from the brand. The brand offers a futuristic look into the world of tennis, 75 years from now which utilizes an array of fictional gadgets and technologies. Lacoste also questions how founder Rene Lacoste would fair in the present day with new age equipment against the likes of Roger Federer and vice versa. The website can be seen at lacoste-future.com.

Ratatat: Mirando

All over the world, kids hear a kick, snare or a computer bleep on a song and immediately take to their laptops with the thought of "I can do that." Much in the way rock did decades ago, and hip hop has more recently.

The electronic, hip hop, alternative duo Ratatat is living proof of this phenomenon. Although their group does incorporate bass and guitar, they are only there to compliment the electro heavy sound coming out of their laptop. As their critically acclaimed genre busting first four studio albums show, they are a perfect example of a group that is influenced by several types of music and may more easily incorporate them into one sound by the use of a computer. Ratatat's penchant to throw sweeping epic sounds with a twist of hip hop onto a single remix has allowed them to collect fans that have an allegiance to several different types of music. This is why Ratatat's video for their first single "Mirando" off of their soon to be released album "LP3" is in itself a remix video. The video takes slices and clips from an old Schwarzenegger (that's Governor to you) movie and turns them into odd visuals and weird choreography that matches with the video game bleeps and blips over jungle drums.

Barry Lynn - Balancing Lakes

Barry Lynn sheds his Boxcutter guise for his return to Planet Mu. Assigned with the near impossible task of balancing lakes, Lynn embarks on a 'dubstep-free' venture of complex, granulated electronics.

We're immediately engaged with the kitschy, mutated 8-bit style funk of 'Abort, Retry, Fail' - a fitting, opening gambit that prepares us for the level of electronic sophistication that follows. 'Something With M In It' is a dreamy-eyed, digital sonata that spans a mere 2.5 minutes - a wonderful, futuristic pop moment. By the time we reach 'Loving Dub' and 'New Orleans', it's clear that Lynn is more than capable of experimenting with genres - quasi-jazz licks and granulated drum n' bass.

A mammoth 14 tracks in, we reach the end of this epic, 'Field Trip' and 'Hayfever Dub' are a very appropriate coda to this very accomplished body of work. Highly recommended!

Laurent Garnier - Back To My Roots

Its been five years since we’ve heard a new tune from Laurent Garnier. After a long absence the boss man is back with his Back to My Roots EP for the Innervisions label.

The story behind the track goes something like this: Garnier was playing at the Panorama Bar in Berlin last February, when he dropped a demo version of “Back To My Roots.” Innervisions’ co-boss Dixon heard the track and freaked out.

Says Garnier, “He said that he loved the sound of it and asked me what I wanted to do with it, mentioning that he would really like to release it on Innervisions. I went back home on the Monday and worked straight away on another track, which I named ‘Panoramix’ (a tribute to that night at Panorama). I sent a very rough demo to Dixon via download and received a text five minutes later saying that he wanted it. It happened really fast without me having any plans at all.”

The EP is due out May 19, and Dixon has described the track as a 'classic, timeless production'.
Elsewhere, Laurent is working on his new album, due out later this year, and is preparing for a world tour to promote it.

Widescreen breaks duo Hybrid mix up ambient electronica and film scores on a new mix compilation Soundsystem 01 due out in July.Hybrid's debut album Wide Angle (1999), which combined breaks and filmscore-like symphonies, earmarked the duo of Mike Truman and Chris Healings as doyens of so-called "cinematic breaks." Cool and Deadly Records

Cool & Deadly is the name of the new label to be run by Tayo and Skool Of Thought.

Cool & Deadly started life in 2007 as a club night at Fabric and has since gone on to host it’s own tent at the Glade festival. The opening remit for the project was to explore music where “The backbone is dub and the body is bass”. Guest DJ’s alongside Tayo have included the likes of Digital Mystikz, Skream, Oris Jay, Drop The Lime, Iration Steppas, Freq Nasty, Buraka Som Systema, and Trojan Sound System.

The Cool & Deadly imprint, launching May 2008, will aim to continue where the night left off, by releasing music for those DJs (and enthusiasts) who have an appreciation for BASS MUSIC in all its forms. The aim of the label is to explore all the music that falls into the space between breaks, dubstep, dub, garage and beyond.

Tayo is an internationally renowned DJ of ten years. He is a resident DJ at Fabric and a purveyor of bass music (as showcased on his “Fabric Live 32” mix – winner of ‘Best Compilation’ at DJ Mag’s Best Of British Awards). In 2000 Tayo started Mob Records, one of the first pioneering breakbeat labels and early home for the Stanton Warriors, and released classic records by artists like Rennie Pilgrem, and Beber & Tamra, as well as the first Plump DJs mix album.

“Working with Skool Of Thought will be great, as we have always talked about similar tastes in music. The label will explore the space between all of our influences, pushing a sound that we believe in and tearing up as many bass speakers as possible along the way” enthuses Tayo ahead of the first set of releases.

Lloyd Seymour aka Skool Of Thought is another long time veteran of the underground music scene. He is label boss of arguably the most consistent breaks label, ‘Against The Grain’, home to Krafty Kuts, Freestylers, Deekline & Wizard and of course Skool Of Thought. He recently released his debut album ‘Random Acts Of Kindness’ with studio partner Ed Solo, which received rave reviews across the board from the music press. Skool Of Thought is also promoter and resident DJ at the legendary mid week club night SuperCharged, bringing breaks and bass to Brighton for a packed weekly session.

“Tayo has been one of the most consistent DJs at my club over the years, he’s never one to follow a crowd and has always pushed the boundaries” comments Skool Of Thought. “We share a common ground for the need to push breaks and bass orientated music forward. We’re prepared to go left of centre and that’s why we have formed Cool & Deadly records”.

Cool & Deadly is the result of many discussions held late into the night, by two people getting very excited about the slew of new music out there, who shared a desire to play an active part in getting it all heard. Established artists like Bassbin Twins will rub shoulders with new artists like Romanian sensation TRG, West Country Dubateers Black Canvas, as well as new music from the two label bosses. Many more exciting projects will be announced over the coming months, but for now a bass loving public can look forward to the following to get things started….right!

Once again featuring the flawless remix talents of rising start TRG.

Clark - Ted

A standout track from Clark's Body Riddle album, Ted sifts through different elements of electronica into a detailed array of challenging programming and deep synthesized sounds. Bouncing trampoline beats richochet atop handclaps and interweave between processed melodic synths, that manage to wobble in a detuned fashion.

A Bibio Remix retains Ted's original structure and melody, only reworking the song as an outsider folk track played back through a broken radio and complete with swashing reversed parts. The pummelling beats of Bruise Animations takes a stop-start approach, with the stuttered drums adding contrast to plucked acoustic guitars.

The high tempo leanings of the first three tracks are then tossed aside for the EP's second half, showcasing Clark's broad range of stylings.

The disposable ambient of Mia Farrow takes in the faint echoes of drums and rustic piano notes, the wind chimes of Springtime Epiphany recall vintage Four Tet and the eerily gruesome strings of the warped-orchestral flavoured Cremation Drones, should be placed alongside Goblin for best horror film soundtrack.

Clark is a rare producer whose paint splatted pallet impressively absorbs both electronic and non-electronic influences.

Santogold - L.E.S. Artistes

Philly singer-songwriter Santogold has become cool over the last few months, earning plaudits from the trendy music mags, the even trendier music blogs and just about everyone who works at Radio 1. Fortunately, her new single 'L.E.S. Artistes' more than justifies the hype.

Though its lyrics bristle with new-to-the-city insecurity ("What am I here for? I left home to disappear is all!"), the way it marries eighties new wave to modern electro is strikingly confident, creating something fresh, vibrant and instantly arresting. Actually, given how impressively it updates the new wave sound, it's tempting to view 'L.E.S. Artistes' as a hipper older sister to Ashlee Simpson's 'Outta My Head' - a song, not coincidentally, that Santogold helped to write.

Blu Blu - animated graffiti

Muto is the creation of Blu Blu in Buenos Aires, Argentina. You can see more of Blu Blu’s work at their website. You can also keep track of them at their blog.

Desktop mash up

Musiv video made by using a desktop computer. This doesn't mean using Final Cut or even iMovie or anything like that. No, take it a step further and use pretty much every other application.

According to TUAW:

A digital filmmaker named Dennis Liu has made an amazing video for The Bird And The Bee’s lovely song “Again & Again”. The set? His Mac desktop. You sort of have to see it for yourself to understand; luckily, Dennis has dropped it on YouTube so that the world can see it in low-res glory.

And according to the comments section, the video took about 3 months to make. I lost count trying to track what programs they use in the vid, but a short list includes Microsoft Word, Notes, Photo Booth, iTunes, Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, Time Machine, a touch of iMovie or GarageBand, Finder, Quicktime, Spotlight, Widgets…crap…I lost count. The video ultimately ends up on YouTube and in the iTunes Music Store.

It’s pretty f’ing incredible!

Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu

Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu, former member of Australian band Yothu Yindi, was born blind and sings mostly in his traditional language. He plays the guitar upside down because there were no left handed guitars in the communities he grew up in.

This week on the RA podcast: a rambunctious party mix from UK duo The Count and Sinden.

Joshua Harvey and Graeme Sinden are the London producers behind The Count and Sinden. Perhaps better known under their solo guises, Hervé and Sinden, the duo have brought their warped dance music sensibility together to craft one of the 2008’s most insistent singles, ‘Beeper.’ The earworm can be directly traced back to The Count and Sinden’s love of everything from Baltimore club, hip-hop, electro, Miami bass and grime.

Baile funk, dancehall, bassline house and plenty of other genres also factor into the stop-start podcast that they’ve crafted exclusively for RA. But The Count and Sinden don’t care all that much about genre tags. Their goal is simply to rock the party—and in this rambunctious mix that takes in Bjork, Armand van Helden and South Rakkas Crew, that’s exactly what they do.

What have you been working on recently?

We've been busy working on the full-length album for Domino and also the follow-up single to 'Beeper'. We're also rehearsing hard too. We're just about to embark on the Count and Sinden Live club tour which starts mid-May and then were onto the Summer Festival circuit soon after. We have also been finishing off the Machines Don't Care collaboration album

Where and how was the mix recorded?

We recorded it in the studio on Ableton Live. We didn't want it to be too tricksy, it's easy to get carried away with its features, layering loads of samples and throwing down 100 tunes in an hour. It's more old-school tunes played after the other style.

Can you tell us a little about the idea behind the mix?

To represent our sound, be eclectic and make it fun to listen to. It's a typical Count & Sinden set, some remixes we have done together and individually as Herve and Sinden, some new signings to our respective labels Cheap Thrills and Counterfeet and influences.

London's got a lot going on. And it's different to say the Baltimore thing in the USA. How have Grime and Dancehall influenced your sound?

Grime and dancehall are influences but then so is everything to us. We don't draw the line anywhere. I'd say London city is an influence but, without focusing too much on any area, the UK is more of an influence—music from the past up to the present day. Travelling to other countries and meeting people and getting a kick out of music across the world is really important too.
